This spring Maria offers a trio of 3-day workshops in sculpting, carving, and using terra sigillata, encouraging you to embrace the unfamiliar, and invite your curiosity. It’s meditative, challenging, and fun!
This Spring I offer a trio of 3-day workshops in sculpting, carving, and using terra sigillata, designed to give participants enough concentrated time to work, hit their stride, make some good mistakes, and take away enough information to continue the work back in their studios. Note: If necessary, I will tweak the schedule dates to best meet the needs of those who want to participate, so please communicate with me regarding your preferences. Workshops are limited to 6 participants, so I encourage you to enroll early.
Carving Bas-relief Ceramic Sculpture: the marriage of 2-D and 3-D
This is a carving workshop, open to students at all levels of experience. I use this technique for my current wall-mounted work, and it can also be applied to free-standing 3-D work. It’s fun, compelling, and meditative. Choose this workshop if you can maintain a spirit of adventure, knowing that your “magnum opus” may be a little further down the pike, post-workshop, as you practice and experiment with what you’ve learned during the weekend. Plan on leaving your judgments at the door, and entering with a willingness to experiment and play.
- Date: Fri., April 28 – Sun., April 30, 2017
- Time: 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Hand-Building Outside the Box – *New
In this 3-day workshop we’ll experiment with time-honored and quirky hand-building techniques applied in unusual ways to arrive at some interesting artful objects. Suitable for folks at all levels who have a sense of adventure. I encourage you to arrive with a hunch about what you’d like to create, but not a tight plan, leaving room to invite spontaneity and to follow the happy accident!
- Date: Friday, May 19 – Sunday, May 21, 2017
- Time: 9:30 – 4:00 p.m. daily
- Cost: $285 + $30 for materials and firings
Surface Techniques Using Terra Sigillata
This is not as esoteric as it sounds to some of you…Terra Sig is a fired material that’s quite different from glaze. It’s a smooth, milled, burnishable slip that yields a soft, sensual gleam but is not glassy. It’s a low-fire medium by nature. Learn to mix, stain, color line-test, and most importantly...paint, shade, blend, spatter, brush, burnish, and play with this buttery, stuff.
